Babesiosis is a parasitic infection caused by Babesia protozoa that infect red blood cells, typically transmitted by Ixodes (deer) tick bites. While often asymptomatic, it can cause flu-like symptoms, hemolytic anemia, and severe, life-threatening illness, particularly in people without a spleen, older adults, or the immunocompromised.
